FATCA & CRS Audits Underway: What Isle of Man TCSPs Need to Know
The Isle of Man’s Income Tax Division (ITD) has commenced onsite AEOI compliance strategy audits under the FATCA and CRS frameworks – marking the first programme of reviews since their inception on the Island.
These audits reflect the ITD’s strengthened focus on ensuring that Financial Institutions – including Trust and Corporate Service Providers (TCSPs) – are maintaining robust and consistent compliance with international reporting obligations.
A New Chapter in AEOI Oversight
According to the ITD’s GN63 – Onsite Visits Guidance for Isle of Man Financial Institutions (Isle of Man Income Tax Division, January 2025), these audits are designed to assess how effectively Financial Institutions have implemented their CRS and FATCA responsibilities, from entity classification through to reporting and record-keeping.
These are the first officially scheduled onsite reviews of their kind in the Isle of Man, underlining the jurisdiction’s commitment to upholding international transparency standards and reinforcing confidence in its financial services sector.
What the ITD Is Reviewing
As outlined in GN63 and (January 2025), the ITD’s compliance strategy aims to ensure “consistent and effective Financial Institution classification and that due diligence procedures and reporting measures are being implemented and maintained by all affected entities in the Isle of Man by having a robust compliance strategy in place.”

During an onsite visit, authorised officers may:
- Review policy and procedure documentation supporting CRS and FATCA compliance, although this may be requested before an onsite visit.
- Inspect entity classification records and self-certification procedures.
- Assess due diligence processes and the accuracy of reported data.
- Confirm that remediation or corrective actions have been taken, where applicable.
The visits are conducted using a risk-based approach, with selection informed by reporting data, previous submissions, or perceived areas of concern (as detailed in GN63, Sections 5–7).
How Are Financial Institutions Selected for Audit?
According to GN63 onsite reviews are generally Financial Institution–specific and selected based on identified or perceived risk.
This risk assessment may draw on several sources – including data submitted through CRS and FATCA reporting, information gathered from compliance returns, or other intelligence held by the Income Tax Division.
The scope of each audit varies depending on the ITD’s objectives:
- Broad audits are designed to test all aspects of a Financial Institution’s compliance framework, from classification and due diligence through to reporting and record-keeping.
- Narrow audits focus on a specific compliance area where an onsite inspection is more effective than a desk-based review – for example, examining self-certification collection or due diligence documentation.
This approach ensures that reviews are risk-based, targeted, and proportionate, aligning with the Division’s wider compliance strategy.
Getting Audit-Ready
Now is the ideal time for Isle of Man TCSPs and Family Offices to review their compliance frameworks to ensure readiness.
Key actions include:
- Reviewing and updating written policies and procedures.
- Verifying that all self-certifications are complete, dated, and retained appropriately.
- Confirming entity classifications remain accurate and defensible.
- Checking that data and reporting submissions are complete and validated.
